Congressional Briefing on LETPA; 1-17-12

On Tuesday, January 17th, 2012, Congressmen Danny K. Davis, Jesse L. Jackson, Jr., Bobby L. Rush and Luis V. Gutierrez introduced, the Law Enforcement Torture Prevention Act of 2012 (LETPA) in the United States House of Representatives. That same afternoon, Congressman Danny K. Davis hosted a briefing on domestic acts of torture by individuals and groups that operate under the color of local, state, or Federal law. The briefing informed Members of Congress, their staff, the media, and public about the importance and need to prevent acts of torture on American soil and to generate support for the bill. Currently, there is no domestic law that pertains directly to law enforcement as it relates to torture. The only related law on the books refers to torture committed outside of the United States.
